Massachusetts, Plymouth, Connecticut and New Haven joined together in 1643 to form "The Confederation of the United Colonies of New England". It was the first in a series of colonial attempts to unite and work together. Representatives from the four colonies were empowered to negotiate with the Indians and foreign powers-French and Dutchand to settle differences among themselves. The Confederation broke up in 1684 over opposition to the growing domination by Massachusetts.
